A Toast to Davey, Goliath and the Italian Stallion

Saturday mornings at 32 Packard Drive usually started early. My internal 8 year old alarm clock would go off around 6 a.m., and my older brother instincts immediately guided me to my 4 year old brother’s room. A quick flurry of jabs to the ribs and a rapid fire pelting of his Star Wars figures usually did the trick, and he was pissed off excited and ready to join me for some serious cartoon watching.

Before our favorite repeats of the Flinstones, Jetsons and Super Friends, the animated genius of Davey and Goliath could be referenced as the “genesis” of my interest in sports nutrition.

The Genesis of Holistic Health!

While my fascination with health elixirs really had nothing to do with Davey and his talking dog, it was more about the time it aired. The chance that my parents would come downstairs at 6 a.m. was slim, so it seem logical to mix up every liquid in the fridge (including wine and beer) to test on my brother. The usual whining ensued when he was presented with a glass of OJ, grape juice, milk, beer, wine, mustard, ketchup, lemonade and a dash of mayo. However, I was able to force gently convince the preschooler that this would make him healthy! One sip was usually all he could bare, but at least it wasn’t raw eggs.

While I never had the courage to crack a few in a glass and chug it under the glow of the fridge ala Rocky Balboa, this scene below continued to spark my curiosity with health, nutrition and fitness.

25 years later, I’m still trying to get my brother to drink concoctions, and enjoy stories of my parents going to acupuncture together! In the blog posts that follow, I hope to share some of my insight, thoughts and commentary on the world of natural sports nutrition and methods of recovery.

Enjoy!
